"Hidden" Comments
As regular readers know from time-to-time comments have been made in The Granville Press that most would regard as inappropriate. Examples include personal attacks and commercial self-promotion. Such comments can clutter the site and tend to take discussions way off track. In the interests of free and open discussion these comments have only very reluctantly been removed. We would like to minimize the cases where such drastic measures are required. In addition we want to make our editorial decisions as transparent as reasonably possible.
With these thoughts in mind we have implemented a new system for placing inappropriate comments in a "hidden" area. With each "hidden" comment is a reason for hiding that particular comment as well as the full text of the comment. Every user who logs in can view the hidden comments. The link for viewing the hidden comments is located in the left-hand column of the site.
This change will maximize the transparency of editorial decisions while minimizing the distraction from substantive comment on issues.

Hidden Comments
Editor(s):
Can we write hidden comments about hidden comments in the hidden comments section?
I know, parallel universe and all that…but could end up being the entertainment section….?
Who is "we"?
I noticed that the names of the advisory board no longer appear in the section "About The Granville Press". So who is this mysterious person now editing the content (and comments) of the Granville Press? Who is the "we" that decided what is innappropriate?
The New Old Granville Press
Cyclenut,
As has always been the case there are a number of people who are contributing stories and ideas for stories, and who are involved in making editorial decisions. Anyone who is interested in contributing can contact The Granville Press at editor [at] granvillepress [dot] com.
The advisory board is currently being re-formed.
I own the domain name granvilletimes.com which has periodically pointed to granvillepress.com.
Bill Wernet
Bill, Both names were
Bill,
Both names were registered to Mr. Thornborough prior to his passing. Now both names are registered to “secret” with the same hosting company. Would it be fair to say then that if you own granvilletimes.com, you also now own granvillepress.com? The distinction is important. There really isn’t any transparency if no one knows who the men and women are behind the curtain. I don’t even disagree with the idea of hidden comments. It’s your sandbox, I just play in it.
Oh, and I noticed you changed the meta tag description for the site. Good idea. I was actually getting the impression that perhaps one of the local developers had snagged it up.
granvilletimes.com
Cyclenut,
From its inception in 2000 I have been the registrant for the domain name granvilletimes.com. It was never registered in Jack’s name.
Jack was the initial registrant for the domain name granvillepress.com. Currently I am the registrant.
Not certain why Network Solutions’ record of the meta tag description for granvilletimes.com was so old (July 31, 2006). It was from when I had granvilletimes.com pointing to another site.

So William,
can we periodically post hidden comments about hidden comments in the hidden comments section?? It really could be fun. And set aside like that, not distracting from the real business of this webrag. What the heck, get away from all of this “ballus fictous” stuff from folks that can’t for whatever reason put their names on a very local personal blog. The Granville Press is a very important resource in my opinion. I very much appreciate what Jack did here and what now continues. This is real “news” and discussion rarely found these days. Take it to the next level. Be brave. Let’s get it all out. The real work that Jack did was extremely valuable, and IMHO totally UNBIASED. Open forum, No BS. Plain truth photos(even of my house and I very much respected that) etc. So form a platform where folks (folks that can’t name themselves) can go BO/WFO on each other for our enjoyment. The real work that happened here in the past was brilliant, presented in a balanced manner and well written by everyone who contributed. Articles that I have read here far out-compete what Ive seen in many other news outlets. Decent grammer and diction too!Y’all got some talent here. Use it. And if this gets me into the penalty box, I understand.
Interesting idea
Robert,
You have an interesting idea. The "hidden" module does not allow comments. Not certain how hard it would be to modify.
But it seems to me there is another question here. It can be a fine line as to what is fair game, humorous, and fun in public postings and what isn’t. As Jack relayed in his A Comment on Comments, intensely personal attacks and personal intimidation can cross the line. This is particularly the case when the attacks become repetitive and, frankly, boring. For example, it is one thing to say person xyz is not working in Granville’s best interests. Person xyz can respond with reasons why they are doing what they do. However, I am not certain how one responds to being called, for example, Lunatic Larry. It is one thing to say that such and such governmental unit acted idiotically, or even that the governmental unit is a bunch of idiots. But it is something else to have anonymous comments with nasty name-calling directed at a single person whose name is known to all.
All that said, it would be my strong preference that The Granville Press err on the side of leaving posts alone.

The solar panel debate
That’s actually how I found this site. Some people were for it, some against, some were for it then against it, and the slim minority (that would be me) wondered what business anyone had griping about what a man or woman does with their home. Contrary to popular opinion, this is not a democracy - majority does not rule. We are a democratic society bound by the laws of our republic. Law did not prohibit solar panels, nor should they, and I’m stunned that so many intelligent people (like Jack) failed to recognize that.
I was actually disappointed that you submitted an application to the planning commision even though it was not required. Your case in particular highlights a problem with permit process. It’s a “pay to play” program that bureaucrats love. Jack himself admitted that the issue wasn’t the solar panels, it’s the fact that you didn’t ask. Must I always ask permission to do something I’m legally allowed to do and pay for it to boot?
P.S. I also noticed that there was no uproar when the historical society performed work they didn’t have a permit for. Apparantly Robert you’re not one of the cool kids.

Without dissent , there is no dialogue or democracy
Or in other words, expose the truth with sufficient bright lights for the cockroaches to crawl back into the darkness.
Very very few comments have been removed - nearly all of them posted by me.
Despite the assertions of all worshippers *&^%$ (whom I respected in life and admire even more since his passing), the ugly unvarnished truth is hardly ever inappropriate.
It is however, still ugly - even personal. It is always, still the truth.
